Campaign Diary #16

October 18th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Firstly some posts on the referendums which you should go and read before you vote.

Andrea Pappin has a post on the Judicial Pay Referendum and will be returning for a go at the Oireachtas Inquiry Referendum.

Fiona de Londras has also written regarding the Judicial Pay Referendum. Both posts have links within to other reading.

—–
Estelle Feldman, a researcher from the Law Department in TCD has established a website to campaign for a no vote on both referenda.

—–

The TG4 Presidential Election debate will be shown at 7pm this evening. Hosted by Paidí Ó Lionáird, it’ll be bilingual and if the one during the General Election is anything to go by it should be entertaining.

——

Last night on Vincent Browne, FF Senator Thomas Byrne said he’d never had a conversation with Sean Gallagher. Watch this and decide for yourselves if it were possible for him as chair of Ogra FF not to have spoken to Sean (who loves Ogra). PS Labour Party types find something else to send me re someone other than Sean or head out and canvass for your own candidate!

—–

Speaking of Sean (yes I must) the quest to indicate his physical stamina and virility continues. Skipping, sean nos and yesterday JUDO!  (Fifth one in with a black belt and the suit trousers.)

Of course this means if elected that Russian/Irish relations would be improved no end with Putin/Gallagher bouts agreeing beef deals and the like.

—–

David Norris’s speech outside Leinster House yesterday – he seems surprised by the crowd – well if you will tweet about special announcements this is what one gets.  Pity he didn’t match the tweet with some substance.

—–

Human Resources bloggers are getting in on the action.  Darren Connolly from Morgan McKinley is writing about the selection process but seems to have forgotten Dana Rosemary Scallon.

—–

Helen Carroll is blogging about posters and their use in beehives.

—–

TellUsWhy.ie ,  who describe themselves as a  non-partisan, non-profit campaign to provide relevant, comparable and objective information to the Irish Electorate has been asking questions of the candidates and are publishing one set of answers daily.    The text heavy format in different fonts and sizes is difficult and it may help if all the answers were published at once.

Campaign Diary #15

October 17th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Last night David Norris tweeted (I doubt it was himself) that he was making a very important speech today. It became clear soon after that he’s not quitting and there are no letters coming. It’s a ‘reaffirming’ speech according to his campaign team.

—–
To add to last weeks skipping in a school playground, Sean Gallagher is now adding Sean Nós dancing to his range of activities to indicate that he’s younger than Michael D. Higgins.

If you are confused about who Mary Davis is her campaign team is helping out. Election.ie has more on this new tactic.

On Saturday there was a luvvies for Michael D event.

No I don’t know why Nessa Childers is in the picture with Tudors costume designer Joan Bergin or producer Morgan O’Sullivan. Answer on a postcard… sorry I mean the comments.  More photos are available here.

—–

Gay Mitchell headed for Dun Laoghaire yesterday and was joined by former opponent Pat Cox and Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD.

—–

RTE Radio 1’s Late Debate have their profiles of all the presidential candidates online if you have missed them.

Irish Deaf News explain the issues behind the referendums.  No sprinkles or menus here just information which seems sadly lacking elsewhere.

Campaign Diary #14

October 16th, 2011 · Elections, General Election 2011, Irish Politics

A Bumper Weekend Edition

First up today’s REDC opinion poll leader Sean Gallagher. His presidential election broadcast.

—–
Brendan Strong blogs his opinions on the candidates.

—–

The Gay Mitchell Story – according to Johnny Doyle!

—–

Channel 4 News have been over for a visit. Carl Dinnen’s report on the campaign.

—–

I previously mentioned the Youth Forum organised by SpunOut.ie which took place yesterday. Five candidates attended and it turned out to be a most lively event. I do have doubts about all these forums and their value and I am sure that candidates are exhausted with them. More on the issue anon. The forum is very much worth the watch though, a few digs thrown. McGuinness seems tired and fed up, Norris is as loud as ever, Higgins was whipping up a storm, Gallagher still does not know what he thinks about childrens rights in same sex families. The questions were fairly direct including two to Mary Davis about her opinions on airbrushing of images and their impact on young women and body image. There seemed to be amazing energy in the room.

Astrologically speaking it appears Michael D. Higgins will be the next president.
Yup we have astrology folks – it is the weekend edition!

Michael D. Higgins’ Solar Lunar Return (Scorpio 2.58) is cazimi and since the Moon as lunar return is Michael D. himself (Lunar Return Moon is an intensification of the self) as well as taking its meaning from its source, the Solar Return where it is lord 1 (Michael D. himself), it is emphatically clear that the raising up (cazimi) belongs to Michael D. Note lord 7, Jupiter perfects by mutual application its tight opposition with the Sun.

So now you know!

A final nod to Sean Gallagher, well to DTFinn, animator!

Campaign Diary #13

October 14th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Spotted canvassing in Dublin West for the bye-election for FF candidate Cllr. David McGuinness, was one Rory O’Hanlon, former boss of Sean Gallagher. He was accompanied by Brendan Smith TD.  By pure chance I met Cllr McGuinness’s father on Wednesday night. Very proud Dad.

I’m told O’Hanlon didn’t mention Gallagher during the canvass, the eyes were firmly on the Dáil seat.

—–

Speaking of Dublin West’s bye-election, Political Geographer Adrian Kavanagh takes a look at the constituency.  There are 12 candidates!

—–

Mary Davis wants to remind people about the real issues. She’s using her last contribution to the Primetime Debate in this video.

—–
Dana’s campaign posted this on her facebook page yesterday.

‘Sending out our CANVASSING posters to supporters who looking for materials. Many thanks everyone!’

Is she dropping out – it doesn’t look much like from that.  I wonder if she really spent much money on the election.  A lot being made that she needs a quarter of a quota to claim back expenses but I’m not sure she’s spending a whole lot anyway.  No posters or big tour bus anyway. I doubt it’s €200,000.

—–

So You’d Like to be President is a youth event/forum taking place this Saturday organised by  Spunout.ie, an independent national youth organisation.  Sara Burke is hosting the event, there will be candidates and questions from the audience of 16-25 year olds.  No tickets remain for the event but you can watch it online.  It begins at 2.30pm.

—-

Martin McGuinness had his rally in the Mansion House last night with videos from celebrities and New York business types, the big entrance, appearances by former GAA players and Colm Meaney and many SF members visiting from ‘up there’ .  The post rally function was in Lillies.

Video streaming by Ustream

—–

The Irish Times were out with Gay Mitchell in DCU yesterday.  I note that Young Fine Gael women canvass with their handbags.

—–

Airline boss Willie Walsh spoke at the Dublin Chamber of Commerce dinner last night and referred to the presidential election as ‘almost farce’.  He feels Mary McAleese will be an impossible act to follow. Expect more of that from business types as the clock ticks down.

—–

Paddy Power has a video ‘skit’ out featuring Michael D and Sean Gallagher, well versions of them anyway. I assumed we’d see better attempts at humour before the end of the campaign. But now I’m not holding out much hope.

—–

Finally I would welcome any links to posts, videos etc which look at the forthcoming referendums .  It’s time to get informed and the issues have nothing to do with sprinkles or ice-creams.

Candidate’s tunes – Mary Davis

October 13th, 2011 · Elections, General Election 2011, Irish Politics

Just in from Mary Davis, her favourite song.

Wake up maggie I think I got something to say to you
It’s late september and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I’m being used
Oh maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that’s what really hurt

The morning sun when it’s in your face really shows your age
But that don’t worry me none in my eyes you’re everything
I laughed at all of your jokes my love you didn’t need to coax
Oh, maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that’s a pain I can do without

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover and
Mother what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed
And in the morning kick me in the head
Oh maggie I couldn’t have tried anymore
You lured me away from home ’cause you didn’t want to be alone
You stole my heart I couldn’t leave you if I tried

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy’s cue and make a living out of playing pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin’ hand
Oh maggie I wish I’d never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I’m as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart but I love you anyway

Maggie I wish I’d never seen your face
I’ll get on back home one of these days
