They haven’t gone away but are ‘down here’ avoiding questions

October 13th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

No diary today… last night’s debate was just too bizarre.

Back when the dust settles – or someone answers a question they are asked.

David Norris – They Bless Goldfish

October 12th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Campaign music – ok well music about the candidates then.

Uploaded yesterday by DjUachtarain, and interesting in reminding us how little Senator Norris has spoken about lesbian and gay issues during the campaign in fact everyone else has mentioned him in this area but not the candidate himself.

Campaign Diary #12

October 12th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Advertising practitioner, brand expert (and gentleman) Nick McGivney has written some very helpful advice on social media using brand management perspectives for those considering running for public office and those who work with them.

——
Don’t forget to keep an eye on Irish Election Literature Blog – he’s got some gems lately including a badge from a De Valera campaign.
——

I saw some of this on RTE News on Monday night and hoped the Norris campaign would put it up. David was on Henry Street and made a public address. I’m not sure it looks very presidential, it reminded me of a student union hustings. I attended the Today FM Last Word debate yesterday and thought his performance was much improved and a lot quieter.

If you need some help in deciding how to vote – ok I don’t know how helpful it is- but try it anyway – Votomatic is back to help you decide.

——

I am sadly disappointed at the lack of election music so far this campaign.  My disappointment increased 3 fold when this arrived in my inbox last night from the Corrigan Brothers.  Come on Sinn Fein surely you can come up with some trad or someone can rap for Dana?

—–

Speaking of music, there’s a gig being organised for Michael D Higgins in The Village on October 23. The Stunning are headlining it, other acts to be announced.

—–

Dana was on O’Connell Street in Dublin yesterday, the Irish Times were with her with their camera.

The piece that interested me most was the newly qualified teacher who can’t get a job and now will have to take up JobBridge to get her teaching hours up working alongside people who are being paid a full wage. She is in debt to the tune of €9,000. The INTO are now supporting Job Bridge much to the anger of many newly qualified teachers. I suppose with the diploma the teachers are more exportable but the principle of equality for all members seems to have deserted the union.

TCD Politics professor (and a former lecturer of mine) Michael Gallagher writes on what happens if a President goes rogue.

Campaign Diary #11

October 11th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

More movie watching for you today.

Martin the Movie – in the west last weekend. It’s 10 minutes long and includes footage from Roscommon hospital protests, no mention of the similar health and services cuts in Northern Ireland from the government he is a part of. He said if elected he’d raise the issue with the Taoiseach in their regular meetings. He’s also talking about opening Aras an Uachtaráin on Christmas Day for the homeless – expect that kite to come to a debate near you soon. By the way he’s looking for you to use your smartphones to send videos to him.

—–

David Norris was in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday and went behind a stall and made an impromptu address.

There will be no Norris for President posters for the campaign, an announcement was made yesterday indicating that he believes tax payers should not have to contribute to posters for safety, environmental and aesthetic reasons.
—–

Michael D Higgins visited Newstalk yesterday for an interview with George Hook, you can listen back to his interview here.

—–
Una Mullally’s household received election addresses from Gay Mitchell yesterday, different ones including Anorack Gay. So she put them to use.

By the way if you missed the classic that was Gay Mitchell vs Martin McGuinness vs Eamon Dunphy from Newstalk on Sunday 2nd October the video is now online.
—–
Sean Gallagher is having a Dragons Den Lunch on Saturday at €100 a pop. The Dragons will be there but the show’s host Richard Curran will not be present as advertised.

—-
This clip of Fr. Ted did the rounds a bit yesterday after Dana’s testy interview with Pat Kenny.

However someone writing for the Irish News in Belfast is listening to her and her campaign were eager to let people know about the positive coverage after a bad few days.

Sean Gallagher and the way he might look at you

October 10th, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

My other half and her mother met Sean Gallagher in Letterkenny on Saturday. The ‘mother in law’ heard he was going to be in town so bus times were checked and there was going to be a run in for messages made. ‘Where is he, I wonder what time he’s going to be in at?’ The fact he is bald and reminds her of her son is an added bonus. She was starstruck. (Her daugher claims she was pushed in to say hello.)

The text message I got said it all. ‘He asked me my name’. Looking at Gallagher on television you can see how he greets people and pats them on the arm and looks into their eyes and appears interested. It’s all positive stuff, no sob stories. ‘Its very lovely to meet you ladies’.

Miriam Lord analyses the technique further in the Irish Times today. Gay Mitchell is trying to play the celebrity card against him. That won’t work as he goes around playing up the entrepreneur card attracting people into the country seemingly and it’s clear that this election people are averse to negative campaigning. The ‘Mother in Law’ is convinced he’ll get people into Ireland to make jobs. I wasn’t in Donegal at the weekend so didn’t get a chance to discuss the nature of the constitutional limitations of the presidency with her. Sean Gallagher shook her hand and looked her in the eye and sure he’s great on the telly. She’s since favourited his website. Job done.
