Ireland to be examined by UN Universal Periodic Review on Thursday

October 2nd, 2011 · Equality, Irish Politics, Social Policy

It is an important week for the examination of human rights issues in Ireland as the Irish Government will be appearing before the UN Universal Periodic Review in Geneva on Thursday morning October 6.

The Universal Periodic Review is a process through which the human rights records of the United Nations’ 192 Member States are reviewed and assessed every four years. It is a new monitoring system of the UN Human Rights Council and it is the first time that UN States directly examine each other on their human rights record.

In preparation for this examination 17 NGO’s have been leading the civil society response to the UPR, the result of which was published and submitted in March of this year. The project titled Your Rights, Right Now has seen consultations and submissions throughout the country involving many groups and sectors of society. Over 100 civil society organisations have endorsed the report.

More about this process is detailed in this short film.

Other civil society organisations also made submissions for consideration by the committee.

The Irish Government submitted their report to the United Nations in July.

The United Nations published their analysis and have heavily referenced the Your Rights. Right Now document throughout.

On Thursday morning you can watch the examination live online where Minister for Justice Alan Shatter will be defending Ireland’s human rights record.

Campaign Diary #8

October 1st, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Today in Ennis (I think Confirmed O’Connell St, just outside the Diamond Bar ). This was tweeted by Senator David Norris’s team but then deleted – but I still got my (oh so clean) hands on it.  Thanks to Tom Dunne retweeting it.  Your Captions please.

I’ve had a look around the blogosphere (still alive, reports of it’s demise are as ever inaccurate) Here’s a round up of a few.

The Student Observer blog has a Late Late debate card

Ed Walsh is blogging, yes that Ed ‘UL’ Walsh. He’s writing about Martin McGuinness.

World By Storm over at the Cedar Lounge is giving us a look at bits of the Martin McGuinness interview in today’s Daily Mail.

Harry Browne writes for US publication Counterpunch about the distraction from reality and the choice presented from the ‘extraordinary array’ of candidates. (That’s not a good ‘extraordinary’ either.)

A vote for Mitchell is a vote for the future seemingly.

Campaign Diary #7

October 1st, 2011 · Elections, Irish Politics, Trot for the ARAS 2011

Happy weekend, we are into day 4 of the official campaign and we’ve had 2 debates (ok the Late Late was fairly debate less but intense enough – they are all terrified of challenging each other!) and a load of interviews.

—-

Seán Gallagher has made an appeal for online support and canvassing. He may be the ‘grower’ in this campaign.

—–

By now you will have seen many versions of Mary Davis posters, interestingly enough the campaign itself decided to blog about some of them.
—–
Mary was in Belfast on Thursday. She spoke on the death of Gusty Spence and also mentioned Martin McGuinness and hopes he’ll stay on as Deputy First Minister. (Anyone else noticing she’s doing that Robinson hand thing?)

—–
During a press conference last night after the Late Late Show David Norris mentioned being mobbed in the Liberties. The Irish Times was there to catch it. (Beard trimmed making him a lot younger looking by the by).

—–
Martin McGuinness’s campaign love their dramatic music and visual effects.

—–

Irish Election Literature Blog
is again providing us with examples of Presidential Election campaign ephemera old and new – very much worth a visit.
